The following statement can be attributed to Jeff Nobers, executive director of Pittsburgh Works Together:
Pittsburgh Works Together commends the Pennsylvania Senate for its bipartisan action to remove the Commonwealth from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. We urge the House to move forward in a bipartisan fashion to pass the proposed legislation.
RGGI imposes a tax on the energy sources that provide most of Pennsylvania’s electricity. No matter how well intended, RGGI will raise costs and decrease production at a time when the electric grid is already under stress.
Nor is RGGI necessary to achieve its stated goals. Pennsylvania already produces more carbon-free electricity more cheaply than any RGGI state, as a recent PGH Works study documented.
We urge all elected officials in Harrisburg to work together in a bipartisan fashion to take Pennsylvania out of RGGI and implement a thoughtful and rational energy policy in the Commonwealth.
