Pittsburgh Works Together Briefs Legislators and Civic Leaders on PA’s Energy Crisis

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, January 16, 2025 - Pittsburgh Works Together, an economic development alliance of business and organized labor locals hosted a critical briefing on Pennsylvania's energy future, with a focus on the impending challenges of the state’s electric grid. Held at the Champions Club at Acrisure Stadium, the event brought together state legislators, business leaders, and civic organizations to explore urgent issues facing the state’s electric system.

The event featured a keynote address from Tim Gallagher, CEO of ReliabilityFirst, a federally chartered regulatory organization under FERC and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation which has independent oversight of over 300 entities, including grid operator PJM Interconnection, power companies and generators.

“This issue is not just a regional challenge – it has far-reaching implications for our economy, our communities, and the future of Pennsylvania. It is critical that we take immediate, coordinated action to ensure reliable, affordable energy for all residents and businesses,” said Jeff Nobers, Executive Director of Pittsburgh Works Together.

Following the keynote, a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Cook, Vice President of Technical Strategy for the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies (AEIC), explored potential solutions and the role of government, utilities, and the private sector in addressing the crisis.

Panelists included:

• Adrien Ford, Director of Wholesale Market Development for Constellation Energy, who discussed innovative projects like the restart of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to power Microsoft data centers.
• Stephen E. Bennett, Senior Manager of Regulatory & Legislative Affairs for PJM Interconnection, who provided insights into the regulatory challenges and responsibilities of overseeing the power grid for millions of people.
• David Fisfis, Vice President of Energy Policy and General Counsel for Duquesne Light Company, who highlighted the role of local utilities in securing energy reliability.

The briefing emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between state legislators, industry leaders, and utilities to create a sustainable and resilient electric grid that can meet Pennsylvania’s growing needs.

“This event has sparked important conversations about what is at stake for our state’s energy future,” added Nobers. “We are committed to working with all stakeholders to address these challenges and ensure that Pennsylvania remains a leader in energy innovation and reliability.”

The briefing was informed by key findings from The PJM Grid in Peril: What Will Keep the Lights On?, a comprehensive report by Pittsburgh Works Together. The research highlights critical vulnerabilities in Pennsylvania’s electric grid, forecasting potential power shortages by 2030 unless significant reforms and investments are made. This report serves as a vital resource for understanding the scope of the crisis and the urgent need for coordinated action to secure a reliable energy future for the region.
